When trying to investigate in Germany differences in price levels at any given point in time, one will quickly realize that there is not enough information available for this purpose. There is clearly a gap with respect to data, and not only in the official German price statistics. The "Rat für Sozial- und Wirtschaftsdaten (RatSWD) [Council for Social and Economic Data ] took this topic up in 2008 and advertised a competition for expert advice. The seven expert reports which received financial subsidies have been collected in this volume. The authors look at the methods that can be taken into consideration for the calculation of the information needed and at the tools best suited for regional comparison. They debate the standards expected from a real estate price index and ways of using existing data sources. The book also shows how regional price indices are compiled in Austria and Switzerland. In addition to the seven reports, two other relevant contributions have been included that introduce experimental regional price indices.
