As a rule entering a University is not prohibited and nobody is warned of the risks; still we may talk of the building site University: the current debates at German Universities relating to efficiency, quality and resource management strikingly resemble those of well-known, large construction sites. Topics such as autonomy and excellence of Universities, degree course reforms and third-party fund raising push the issues relating to reforms of career paths and conditions of employment in the background as they simultaneously increase their urgency. During the 6th GEW (education and science union) Science conference scientists of German Universities questioned the career paths and conditions of employment from a human resource management perspective. The responsibilities of Universities, research institutions and investors were discussed from different perspectives relating to the current human resource policies. The conference publication provides an insight into the contributions, workshops and discussions and thus portrays the discursive scope of the development of the "Herrschinger Kodex - Gute Arbeit in der Wissenschaft" (Herrsching Code - good practice in science).
