You sit down to answer a question you definitely know the answer to.

Someone asks, “What do you think we should do?”

Nothing unusual. You have experience. You know the situation. You have opinions. Several of them, unfortunately.

But instead of answering, your hand moves toward the keyboard.

“Let me check something.”

What you mean is:

Let me ask AI what I think before I risk discovering what I actually think.

This is how dependence usually arrives. Not with a dramatic announcement. Not with a robot voice saying, “Your independent cognition subscription has expired.” It arrives quietly, disguised as convenience.

At first, you use AI for obvious tasks. Rewrite this email. Summarize this report. Give me five dinner ideas that do not involve me eating crackers over the sink. Sensible. Efficient. Civilization continues.

AI Should Arrive Second More Often

Not always.

If you need a conversion, definition, summary of a long document, formatting help, or ten variations of a phrase, there may be no heroic intellectual benefit in staring at the wall first.

You do not need to independently rediscover Celsius.

But for tasks involving judgment, creation, interpretation, or decisions, AI often works better when it arrives second.

Try this sequence:
