Book Presentation: The Motherhood Manifesto by Joan Blades and Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner

Book Abstract

Economists agree that the job of mothers is vital to our country’s future well-being. Motherhood is perhaps the most important and challenging job in the world. However, “right now, motherhood in America is at a critical juncture.” Women’s roles continue to change, and increasingly, families need two incomes to support themselves. We’re also seeing more children raised in single-parent homes.

The obstacles moms currently face in the U.S. frequently inspire commentators to say that such women need to find more balance. This statement reveals a misunderstanding of the issue. “The truth is that our society hasn’t caught up to support the unprecedented diversity of roles modern women take on in a single day.” In response, Blades and Rowe-Finkbeiner propose six major avenues of change our country needs to take.
