The architecture of American military presence — roughly 750 overseas bases across more than 80 countries, anchored by carrier strike groups, forward-deployed air assets, and interlocking alliance structures — remains without parallel in recorded history. No previous empire, from Rome to Britain, maintained a comparable global footprint in peacetime. Yet this extraordinary infrastructure exists alongside a growing paradox: the more visible and extended the projection of force, the more fragile the political consensus that sustains it becomes, both domestically and among nominal allies.
