This is a life-enhancing story of Anglesey-born Emma, Viscountess Bulkeley (1727-1770), daughter of Thomas Rowlands of Caerau, Anglesey, and her marriages to men from two leading Welsh families: James Bulkeley, 6th Viscount Bulkeley of Cashel (1716-1752), Member of Parliament for Beaumaris, Chamberlain of North Wales and Constable of Beaumaris, and after his death to Sir Hugh Williams (1719-1794). Sophia Pari Jones takes us on a vivid journey of life at the time, with its intriguing backdrop of its people, its society and its politics. It depicts the cruel hardships of life, meted out particular to women, regardless of status, but shows the importance of a close-knit community and the support it gives to those within its embrace.
