In 2014 vocational preparation in higher education colleges shall be standardised throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. The state wants to introduce a new type of a one-year training preparation, which is aimed at young adults with special educational needs. This empirical study analyses the situation at colleges in North Rhine-Westphalia and provides recommendations for the implementation of this new model. In their reflections the authors also offer suggestions for the debate relating to the support of the disadvantaged and inclusion within vocational education. The publication is one of the few up-to-date qualitative studies that extensively highlight the process issues of the "black box transition system".
