Every empire has enforced two kinds of borders — territorial and linguistic. The standardization of a national language has never been a purely administrative act. It has been, in most documented historical cases, a deliberate compression of political space: a reduction of what can be said, who can say it, and which communities retain the authority to name their own experience. When the state declares one tongue official and another provincial, it is not simply choosing a medium of communication. It is choosing which identities survive institutionally, and which are left to erode in silence. The global economy of language operates with a structural logic its beneficiaries rarely examine. English's dominance in scientific publication, digital platform architecture, and international labor markets does not reflect the neutral triumph of a superior communicative tool. It reflects the accumulated advantage of colonial infrastructure, Cold War cultural policy, and the commercial interests of technology companies headquartered in a handful of cities. A researcher publishing in Yoruba or Quechua does not lack intelligence or rigor. They lack access to the indexing systems, peer networks, and institutional frameworks that determine which knowledge counts. This asymmetry reshapes not only careers but epistemologies — quietly deciding which questions are considered worth asking.
