Opis

Iuvenilio and Iuvenilia are cousins. Their family, native of Kentucky, moves overseas owing to the turbulent political situation, ending up on Saint Martin's hills. But this simple story will prove to be intimately connected to a major one. And there, in Saint Martin, in a game of subtle eroticism and tension, Iuvenilio and Iuvenilia will take part in one of the most significant events in the history of the Risorgimento.

CHAPTER 1

That night Iuvenilio dreamt of things which were odd for his tender age, thirsty for knowledge (perhaps) as a result of his excitement from previous days, which had made his teenage life all the more visibly intricate. His family, native of Kentucky, had been living for some time in that golden land located between the Rivers Chiese and Mincio and had put down fresh roots just there, establishing a distillery of a rather peculiar whiskey, whose flavour was obtained from the crystalline water of those two rivers. Nevertheless, Iuvenilio's father had come to learn of the presence of a small nature-flavoured stream to the north of their mansion, which poured its precious fluid into Garda Lake. Thanks to this nectar he would produce a divine kind of whiskey. Therefore he settled on relocating his illegal distillery in Rivoltella, which required that the entire family move… this possibly being the reason for Iuvenilio's restless sleep: yet another new home to throw him into a brand-new dimension not without a deceptive ruggedness.

The first of the Lawrence family's moves could be traced to shortly beforehand and had been thoroughly radical: from Kentucky to Saint Martin [1], picturesque site of Desenzano's hinterland, a few steps from Garda Lake. Translocation of the family's genes was due to the political situation in the United States, that saw ethical and economical divergences (increasingly wider between North and South) as a potential spark to set ablaze the secessionist fire by those States living on cotton cultivation. So Enian Lawrence, Iuvenilio's father and undisputed head of the family, decided to set up his whiskey distilling business in a foreign country, far from the wind of dissension blowing in the United States. He involved his sister Ella too in his choice, who in turn persuaded her husband Benj (slightly deaf but quite attuned to moving lips) to follow the new route Eastward (diametrically opposite to the one sailed by the Pilgrim Fathers more than two centuries earlier).

Along with Enian and Ella's families, additional small groups followed the “way back” eastward, for fear of ending up entangled in hard to control turmoil. They used to call themselves the “ inverse pilgrims”, having accomplished the route opposite of the Mayflower's, which on 11 th November 1620 had landed the Pilgrim Fathers coming from England on American soil.
