Opis

Leadership is not for a particular set of people. You and I were created to lead. You can be a leader in your chosen field or career. True leaders possess the ability to inspire, motivate, encourage and enable others towards the effectiveness and success of an organization or group of which they are members. They do, look and act differently. They are as different as the groups they are leading. But they do possess some common characteristics or qualities. That's what Samuel Flourish in his usual simplicity has presented in this small handbook.

Introduction

Leadership is not for a particular set of people. You and I were created to lead. When God created man, he gave him the power to dominate and subdue the earth. This talks about leadership. You can therefore be a great leader in your chosen field or career.

True leaders possess the ability to inspire, motivate, encourage and enable others towards the success and effectiveness of an organization or group of which they are members. Leaders do look, and act differently. They are as different as the groups that they lead.

At the AFRICAN SCHOOL FOR EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP we raise outstanding leaders of the 21st century. This small booklet you have in hand is just a small portion of one of our teaching materials. Read along and practice what you have learnt.

The leader and his/ her qualities

Leadership certainly has many definitions but I want to present to you the most common one by Dr. Myles Munroe. He defined leadership as the ability of an individual to influence, inspire, motivate, and encourage people towards the achievement of a common goal or purpose.

A leader therefore is an individual who possesses the ability to influence, inspire, motivate and encourage people towards the achievement of a common goal or purpose. Let’s take a look at the family. We all come from different homes. I love using the family because it is where God started with mankind. We all know that the father is the head of the family and every good father will want his family to move towards the direction of love, peace and prosperity. For him to achieve this he has to inspire, motivate, influence and encourage the members of the family. Someone will have to wash plates, clean the house, run errands etc. children will have to go to school too. If all the above mentioned qualities are put in place then he will achieve this purpose. It should be noted that intimidation is the opposite of inspiration. When you inspire people you bring out the best in them but when you intimidate them they may either resist or walk away from you. When a father succeeds to do all these he has not only succeeded as a leader but has also succeeded in raising leaders. It might shock you but it’s true that when a child is asked to run errands, wash plates etc, that child is already exercising some leadership roles. So you see why I say that all of us were created to lead. When we get our children to do house chores we are already raising leaders. It all starts from there.
