* * *
There’s absolutely nothing about a Teacup Maltese that doesn’t steal my heart! From their long, silky coats, expressive little eyes, and black button noses, this breed of dog is the perfect little bundle of energy and love.
I’m the proud owner of three little Miniature Maltese dogs, and they’re my babies through and through. I wouldn’t trade them for the world.
I was born and raised in Southern Georgia, and cute, tiny dogs are as much a part of Southern culture as sweet tea and biscuits. I’d always owned toy breeds, but it wasn’t until four years ago, when I purchased my own small, cozy little home on the outskirts of Macon, that I decided that the time was right to expand my horizons and get a Miniature Maltese. My life has never been the same since.
The beautiful, tiny Teacup Maltese!
Since you’re reading this book, I think it’s safe to assume that you, too, are interested in bringing home a new bundle of joy—in which case, congratulations! In my humble opinion, you couldn’t have picked a better breed. Or perhaps you’ve already brought your new Teacup Maltese home but aren’t sure what you should do next; trust me, I’ve been there! Either way, there are several things that you should know about your new dog.
There’s so much to learn about this breed. Some I’ve learned the hard way, through trial and error; other bits of information I’ve picked up from breeders, vets, fellow Teacup Maltese and Miniature Maltese enthusiasts, and my own research.
To help others like myself, who have an undying love for these dogs and a desire to know everything there is to know about them, I decided to compile this book of information, tips and tricks, and details of my personal experience with these adorable, remarkable animals, all in a personal, easy-to-understand format.
We’ll cover all sorts of topics, from Teacup Maltese grooming and Teacup Maltese feeding and nutritional needs to temperament, detailed training methods, and the do’s and don’ts of caring for your little angel.
The challenges of owning and caring for a Toy Maltese are significantly different from those associated with most other dogs. Before I bought my first dog, Snowbell, I tried to do a little research on the breed, and boy, I was frustrated with some of the Maltese care books I picked up. None of them were specific to the Toy variety, for such a tiny dog presents unique challenges. I wanted detailed, well-compiled information that applied to the Teacup Maltese, and not just any generic dog. Well, fear not! While a lot of the tips and tricks you’ll find later on can indeed apply to most dogs, the focus of this book is the Maltese—and to some extent its mixes, like the Maltipoo.
While my preference for these dogs is just that, a preference, I think it’s safe to say that the Miniature Maltese is one of the most popular of the toy breeds, for many reasons that we’ll cover together later in the book. If you are indeed thinking about getting one of these dogs, I promise that your life will only improve if you apply these Teacup Maltese tips and techniques. But, as I’m fond of saying, knowledge is power. Always educate yourself on the breed of your dog before you bring her home, to ensure that both you and your new pet have the smoothest transition possible.
With that being said, thank you ever so much for purchasing this guide, and I hope that it will enrich your life and bring you one step closer to finding the perfect little bundle of energy and love that is the Teacup Maltese.
Picture time! Teacup Maltese dogs are smart, sweet, and sassy!

Have you ever glanced at your dog and wondered, with genuine interest and curiosity, where your pet came from? One of the things that sparked the idea for this book was me sitting on my porch swing a few months back, drinking a nice cold glass of sweet tea and watching my three Miniature Malteses (Snowbell, my first, and Jasmine and Lily, who are sisters) frolic and play on the front lawn. As I watched them, I began to ponder where they’d come from. My love for Teacup Maltese dogs had grown, and after the joy that that they had brought to my life, I wanted to know absolutely everything about them. Which got me wondering—where did the amazing dog we now know as the Teacup Maltese come from, and for what purpose had they been bred?
Pretty in pink!
The Maltese have a completely fascinating history, one that
I’ve been mildly obsessed with. It’s fascinating to imagine the ancestors of my pets running around Italy hundreds of years ago, not to mention the people who might have owned them. While this chapter isn’t exactly essential to the care of your Miniature Maltese, I think it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the origin of your dog’s breed.
The Toy Maltese, first and foremost, is a slight variation of the regular Maltese, which origins can be traced back nearly 2,500 years (although there’s no concrete proof, some claim it’s been around for even longer—Charles Darwin, the father of evolutionary theory, placed the breed at about 8,000 years old)! In fact, one of the earliest known examples of Maltese dogs in art was estimated to have been created around 500 B.C.
True to its name, this perky little dog is thought to have originated from the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta, although some people argue that it might have come from the now-nonexistent Sicilian town of Melita. Personally, I think it’s more probable that it originated from Malta, but since I don’t hold a degree in doggy history, that’s just my guess. Either way, the Maltese came from the Mediterranean, I think we can all agree on that.
The tiny Mediterranean island of Malta, located off the coast of Italy, is the most likely origin of the Maltese breed.
Many prominent historical figures either owned Maltese dogs or described them in historical documents and fictional pieces. The famed Greek philosopher Aristotle mentioned this dog in some of his writings, and Roman poet Marcus Valerius Martialis wrote several verses about a ‘small white dog”, and many people believe that he was, in fact, referring to the Maltese.
