Chapter 1: Steak ‘n Shake

“Isn’t this just grand?” Secret Agent Disco Dancer, the outrageous life-sized frog, kicked back in the red and black cushioned booth and sipped his iced tea. “You see that?” He pointed to a waiter passing by. “That’s the Birthday Cake specialty shake. And that one right over there. Hmm...” He made a face. As the waitress passed by, he whipped out his tongue, and got a sample of the tan-colored shake. “Mmm...Salted Caramel, if I’m not mistaken.” He licked his lips.

“Dad!” Laike, his blue-skinned frog son, looked around, hoping that no one had noticed his father take a sip of someone else’s drink. “So why do they call this place Steak ‘n Shake? Do they really serve steaks?” He flipped through the menu, but didn’t see anything resembling sirloin or rib eye prime cuts.

“The next best thing--steakburgers!” He whipped his tongue again, which Laike caught in mid air.

“And what on earth is a steakburger?” Laike released his father’s tongue.

“Oh, it’s the Filet Mignon of fast food burgers.”

“But I thought you said that Kobe beef burger at Disney Springs was the Filet Mignon of burgers.”

“Kobe schmo-bee. That’s so last week.” Secret Agent Disco Dancer gestured. “Wait...didn’t he retire? Anyways, steakburgers are where it’s at these days, you silly blue frog.”

“Whatever you say, dad.” Laike rolled his eyes. “Wait a minute. Where did you get that iced tea? We haven’t even placed an order yet!”

“I don’t know. It was just sitting here when we arrived.” Secret Agent Disco Dancer shrugged.

“Ew, gross!” said Laike.

“Is there any such thing?” He slurped up the last of the iced tea.

“Hi, welcome to Steak ‘n Shake.” A large guy with frizzy blondish-brown hair wobbled over. “I’m Mike, and I’ll be taking care of you this afternoon.” He set down two glasses of ice water.

“Taking care of us, eh?” Secret Agent Disco Dancer eyed him suspiciously. “You’re not planning on putting frog legs on your menu anytime soon, are you, pal?”

“Huh?” said Mike.

“Or making that discontinued specialty shake, Frogs in a Blender?”

“What? No!”

“I see...” The crazy frog scratched his chinny chin chin. “Well, I guess you can be our waiter. But first, you’ll need to pass a battery of tests, or what government officials call a background check.” The frog agent took out a large stack of papers from his suit pocket and placed them on the table. “And you’ll also have to take a polygraph.”

“A polygraph? What for?” The waiter thumbed through the endless stack of papers.

“Oh, you know--counter terrorism, espionage. That sort of thing
