THIS SHORT STORY

Rube is one of those stories we write without planning it very much. We just want to put in words some idea that in a future time may be qualified as a short story or something else bigger. It is a mixture of styles, known concepts and personal feelings. It is something of Inkheart, the movie, or Unwritten, the comic, strip by the moment when a little talkative mouse appears. There is also something true, personal and metaphorical that I am unable to explain right now.

I wrote Rube before watching the adaptation of Inkheart to the movies and It can’t rain all the time was to a girlfriend. Dating and some other things in life ended but Rube, as many others remained alive. If one day I become good enough to define things, the Guardian of the Letters may become more frequent over some books even over Rube.

This is a complete short story with all its parts — beginning, middle and final. It is all about a little girl — Rube. Rube is beloved by her parents, she is learning how to read and one day for her surprise, she found a different character. This is a preface.

I hope you all enjoy this reading no matter how old you are and I wish it might fruit soon.

The childhood shows the man, as morning shows the day.

(John Milton)

RUBE

Books and books on the carpet most of them opened showing illustrations of animals, monsters, heroes and princesses. Rube’s attentive eyes were coming and going from one book to other. They were surfing in wonderful with those illustrations in black and white as well as to those ones in beautiful different tons of gray.

She grabbed one of the books from the thinnest La Fontaine collection fairy tales. Yet she didn’t know how to pronounce all those words nor even couldn’t read her father’s thicker books but she enjoyed reading books a lot like that one – thin, illustrated and stories with wonderful characters.
