2-1 A DAY AT THE CLEANER

Plot Summary - Chapter by Chapter Breakdown

Notes: We have left several details of this story vague, so you can give them a personal touch. You can tailor this outline in several of the following ways to make it unique, without changing the main plot. 1) Ivan Hoffman may be a spy from a different country than Russia. 2) Give Bernard Franklin a clearer involvement with Louisa Carmichael. 3) Ritchie’s father may want to be involved in his son’s life and is reproachful of Louisa’s choice of profession. 4) The story doesn’t have to take place in San Francisco. 5) Change the ending so that Ivan has a change of heart because he has fallen in love with Louisa.

Part One - Rising Tension

Chapter One

CH 1/Scene 1 – When Louisa Carmichael enters the Laundromat that day, she is far from expecting to meet Ivan Hoffman, the man that would soon change her life. Louisa is a young woman who tries to make ends meet. She is raising a little boy in the absence of a boyfriend who truly couldn’t care less if she lived or die once he found out Louisa was pregnant. As for Ivan, he is a handsome, young professional, who seems to be on his way up in the world. San Francisco is not a dormant city by any means. He will have to compete with the best in a world dedicated to the ones who can make it to the top.

CH 1/Scene 2 – Louisa has seen Ivan a couple of times at the Laundromat and has wondered each time what he could be doing in this place. Doesn’t he live in one of the condos on the beach front where you have washer and dryer in your place? A question she asks him – to start a conversation sort of thing. Ivan’s smile is enticing and innocent. He tells Louisa that he does in fact have such appliances in his apartment, but they’re far too expensive to run. His hydro bill is monstrous when he uses them. He asks Louisa what she does for a living.

CH 1/Scene 3 – She works for a government office as an admin assistant. When Ivan seems interested in knowing where she works, Louisa becomes very vague and tells Ivan that truly she would prefer not to say. She pretexts that she does not know him and she is leery of strangers. Ivan’s interest is persistent. He has an ulterior motive. He already knows where Louisa works, and he is only interested in what she could do for him. In his mind, she needs money and money is a good lure as any when it comes to share somewhat sensitive information.

CH 1/Scene 4 – When Ivan returns home, he phones his boss to report that he’s made some progress with the “target”. He has a rendezvous with Louisa for the following Friday evening. He will take her out to the restaurant and a movie – as traditional as can be in America! His boss tells him that he would need to receive the required information in two weeks “tops”, or the deal is off. Ivan is used to the pressure and the invoked reason for the rush – trade of sensitive information is always a “yesterday’s” business.

CH 1/Scene 5 – For her part, Louisa can’t help but think about the handsome Ivan. He must be well-off, she tells herself. He drives a nice European car. His clothes look quite new, judging from the little he brings to the Laundromat. He his quiet and has never hit on her. She is looking forward to their date on Friday. When she arrives at work the following morning, Louisa can’t help but brag about her new and “handsome” conquest. But time is not on her side when it comes to babble around the water cooler; the work is piling up on her desk. The main concern today is to decode some encrypted message and send the legible email to her boss.

Chapter Two

CH 2/Scene 1 – The first message Louisa decodes came from an outpost in Iraq. It states that the agent had located two missile bases probably associated with the latest ISIS threats. Louisa is well aware of the sensitivity of that information and will not use a regular computer to transmit the decoded message. Once she has stored the email on her personal flash drive – the one hanging around her neck like a lovely decorative pendant watch – she goes to the bank of elevators just outside of her office and waits for one of them to open its doors.

CH 2/Scene 2 – Once she arrives in her boss’s office, since the man is not there, she downloads the file from her flash drive, logs out and retraces her steps to her office. When midday comes about, Louisa has deciphered about thirty messages for the men and women working in the security division of the NSA in San Fran. She often brings her lunch with her, but today she decides to treat herself to a salad at the corner café. The weather is absolutely perfect to sit at a terrace restaurant.

CH 2/Scene 3 – As soon as she sits down, Ivan’s eyes fall on her. He was waiting to see her appear in the café. He didn’t know that she would come down today. As exciting as the intelligence work can be sometimes, as tedious a “stake out” job is most often. But today Lady Luck seems to be on his side. Yet, he doesn’t want to make his presence known. He needs to confirm two things: One, Louisa wears the flash drive around her neck as he saw her wear each time he met her at the Laundromat; and two, that she truly works for the NSA.

CH 2/Scene 4 – When he observes Louisa return to her office (on the thirtieth floor of the building), Ivan has all the confirmation he needs. Next step: getting the flash drive. The day the mole in the NSA offices mentioned the fact that Louisa would always take decoded messages personally to her boss using the flash drive, Ivan knew he had to get it. He returns home to plan his Friday evening date. He knows he would have to be quick – Louisa would never trust anyone (even her babysitter) with her son’s life for any longer than absolutely necessary.

CH 2/Scene 5 – Friday comes around soon enough. Brigitte Arnold, the babysitter, comes in ten minutes before an excited Louisa was due to leave. When the doorbell rings announcing Ivan’s arrival, Louisa rushes to the door and grabs Ivan’s hands to hurry down the front steps of her small brownstone. Ivan is surprised, but Louisa explains that Ritchie, her son, would make an awful fuss if he realized that she was gone. As they drive to the restaurant, Ivan notes that she is wearing her pendant. As far as he is concerned nothing else counts.

Chapter Three

CH 3/Scene 1 – After an enjoyable meal the couple goes to the theater. The latest movie, which was granted raving reviews in every newspaper across the country, is playing on the big screen. Ivan is a skilled Don Juan and although he takes his time and does not rush into embracing his new conquest, he is steadily closing in “on the kill”. While they kiss, Ivan undoes the clasp of Louisa’s necklace and gets hold of the precious item, which he slips in his jacket pocket. It all happened in a matter of seconds and Louisa has not felt a thing – until she gets home and realizes the flash drive is gone.

CH 3/Scene 2 – Louisa is frantic. She has not erased the latest file on the drive. She needs to find it. She returns to the theater after asking Brigitte to stay with Ritchie for another hour or so. She first thought the necklace fell in between the seats. She finds her seat but another person already occupies it. She sits down next to the person and begins looking for her necklace in between the seats. She then goes down one row and looks under the seats with her pocket light. Of course, disturbing the audience in such a manner does not go down well. It does not take long for the manager to escort her out of the premises.

CH 3/Scene 3 – As soon as Ivan reaches his apartment, he plugs the drive in one of the USB ports of his computer. When he reads the latest message indicating the discovery of presumably an ISIS base of operation, and the location of two missile bases in Iraq, Ivan knows he has to find out the coordinates for these two important “points of interest”. Once again, he loses no time in contacting Louisa to thank her for the lovely evening. She is not home. Brigitte answers that she’ll give him the message as soon as Louisa comes back.

CH 3/Scene 4 – Learning that Louisa is at the theater looking for her necklace gives Ivan the opportunity he was waiting for. He returns to the house, chats to Brigitte as soon as she opens the door. He then grabs her and chokes her just hard enough so that she loses consciousness. He then goes upstairs, takes the three-year old boy in his arms, saying they are going to the fair and walks out of the house.

CH 3/Scene 5 – When Louisa comes home to discover that her son has been kidnapped and that Brigitte is lying unconscious on the floor of the hallway, she panics. She first dials 911 on her cell phone to have an ambulance dispatched at her address and then calls her boss at home.

Part Two - Main Action

Chapter Four

CH 4/Scene 1 – Bernard Franklin is an older man with a kind nature. He has been in the “intelligence acquisition” business for nearly thirty years. When he receives Louisa’s call, he is far from surprised. Louisa is very good at her job and quite clever when it comes to decode messages but totally wet behind the ears as far as sorting out between good and bad acquaintances. Bernard is certain Ivan has taken both the necklace and Louisa’s son. The only reason he would abduct the boy is to obtain further information regarding the latest Iraqi and ISIS intel, which was not on the flash drive.

CH 4/Scene 2 – It’s now the middle of the night but time is of the essence. Ritchie will not be alive by morning if Louisa is not given an opportunity to complete the message with a location for both missiles and ISIS bases. Bernard phones his colleague and gives him Ivan’s description. Based on the information, the other agent is able to reconstruct Ivan’s origin and base of operation. Ivan Hoffman is from Polish descent. He’s been in the States for nearly seven years and has ties with the Russian intelligence network. Although the Cold War is over, the information exchange between the two great powers is still sensitive and delicate.

CH 4/ Scene 3 – Bernard needs to find Ritchie. Without him, unfortunately for both parties, there is no reason to exchange any information. His colleague tells him that Ivan maintains an apartment in the Venice Beach House of Jerky. Although an extremely popular place to see when visiting the area, the tenants keep much to themselves. The shops lined up along the sidewalk near the building could present other possibilities when it comes to hide a young boy.

CH 4/ Scene 4 – As frantic as she is, Louisa knows that there is absolutely no need to display any of her emotions. Bernard has been like a father to her since her parents died and he not only took her under his wing so to speak but has seen to her job security by placing her in the best colleges so that she could learn her craft. She is an intelligent young lady and she’ll pull through this if she does what she is told.

CH 4/ Scene 5 – When the ransom call comes through, Louisa falls apart: Her son will only be released if she delivers the required intel in person. This means Ivan intends to kill them both. No witness is a major policy in the spy game.

Chapter Five

CH 5/ Scene 1 – Bernard will not let that happen. He organizes the sniper to take position across the Venice building where Ivan’s presence has been confirmed. He believes the exchange will take place in the Bike Shop next to the building. According to observers, the place is always busy and there are bikes everywhere, which would make it difficult for anyone to chase after a criminal out of the store.

CH 5/ Scene 2 – In the House of Jerky, Ivan is entertaining his little guest – Ritchie Carmichael – with new toys and train set. Ritchie doesn’t seem to mind being someplace else than his daycare center. He is a quiet boy to Ivan’s relief. A young boy crying would attract too much attention. Ivan’s boss reminds him that he should not display any attachment toward his captive. The job is to get the information and leave no witness behind. Moreover, his boss tells him that his new location – San Jose, NM – is ready for “occupancy” and that his flight reservations have been made.

CH 5/ Scene 3 – “Not really my favorite place,” Ivan remarks to himself after he reads the text message. But a job is a job and it pays well. He phones Louisa again. He tells her that her son will be in her arms at ten in the morning the next day. When she wants to talk to him, he tells her that a photo from his phone should suffice. When Louisa sees her little boy playing with the toys and looking quite happy, she is relieved.

CH 5/ Scene 4 – By the morning, after practically working the whole night, Louisa has obtained the desired information and has deciphered all of the necessary messages. Bleary eyed and worried that Ivan would not let her go free with Ritchie after the delivery is made, she takes heart in Bernard’s promise that everything will be okay.

CH 5/Scene 5 – It’s 9:30 a.m. when Louisa arrives, driving her own car, at the location of the exchange. Bernard had been right. The Bike Shop located beside the Venice Beach of Jerky building is where “it will all end!” She goes to the Bike Shop, looks around, and then walks down the street. She wants to plan her escape. Even though maneuvering through the Bike Shop will be difficult, once out of there, she will need to get away from possible repercussions – like a bullet in the back of her head.

CH 5/Scene 6 – When 10:00 a.m. comes around, Louisa enters the Bike Shop. Contrary to what she expected, it’s deserted. As instructed, she goes to the counter, deposits a briefcase on it and turns around to leave. Ivan is standing in front of her with her son in his arms. As soon as Ritchie sees his mother, he screams his joy and pushes away from his abductor. He bangs his little fists against the man’s chest when he’s not releasing him. When Louisa takes a step to reach for her son, Ivan takes a gun out of his pocket and aims it at her. She backs off while pleading with Ivan to let her son go. “So your guys can kill me?” he retorts.

CH 5/Scene 7 – However, when Ritchie sees and feels his mother’s despair, he gives a great big push against Ivan’s chest which forces him to fall back against some bikes displayed in the middle of the shop. In the confusion, Ritchie is freed. He runs to his mother when a shot rings out. Louisa is hit.

Part Three - Resolution

Chapter Six

CH 6/ Scene 1 – A second shot pierces Ivan’s neck. He falls in a heap – dead. Bernard rushes in after ringing for a private ambulance and telling the local police to stay away. He gets into the store to see Ritchie lying over his mother, crying. Bernard moves the child away and examines Louisa’s wound. She is losing blood rapidly. He needs to prevent her from going into shock. The shop owner, an old forest ranger, rushes over with his first aid kit after witnessing the scene from where he had been told to hide during the exchange.

CH 6/Scene 2 – Louisa is taken to the nearest private hospital where the bullet in her left shoulder is extracted. She will survive the shot, but the ordeal will probably be a lot more difficult to forget.

CH 6/Scene 3 – In the meantime, in the NSA offices, people have located the missile bases in Iraq. Agents and forces have been dispatched to “remove & destroy” the equipment. But as for the ISIS base, it has moved. Nothing remains of what was once a solid encampment visible by satellite.

CH 6/Scene 4 – When the NSA agents examine Ivan’s belongings, they found a disposable phone on which they were able to read a message about New Mexico. Within days, the Russian base of operation has been advised to refrain from attacking private American citizens for intelligence data acquisition. Next time there will be ‘hell’ to pay!
