Notes: We have left several details of this story vague, so you can give them a personal touch. You can tailor this outline in several of the following ways to make it unique, without changing the main plot.

Part One - Rising Tension

Chapter One

CH 1/Scene 1 - Detective William Bell goes to his favorite local Diner in downtown Miami. He has breakfast and reads the newspaper, like he does every morning. He has a conversation with the owner of the diner, an old friend whose known William ever since he was a kid. The owner remarks on how William should drink less coffee and relax more. William Bell tells the owner of the diner why he can’t relax and promises to one day make lead detective in his department.

CH 1/Scene 2 - Detective Bell leaves the diner and goes to a graveyard nearby. It’s his father’s birthday, but Detective Bell shows little emotion. He considers this visit as an honorable duty but nothing more. He awkwardly pays his respects by placing a white rose on his father‘s grave. After a few moments of internal reflection, William gets back in his car and eagerly heads to work.

CH 1/Scene 3 - Darren Wachowski is still in bed. He rolls over and happens to look at the time, realizing he is late for his first day at work. He gets up and has a few donuts for breakfast, barely putting his clothes on before he’s out the door. He forgets his badge and runs back into the apartment to get it. His elderly father reminds him that he should be more thoughtful and responsible now that he finally made it into the police force. Darren gives his father a warm hug and assures him that he’ll straighten up and fly right.

CH 1/Scene 4 - Darren Wachowski arrives at the Miami police department on his first day of fulltime duty. Chief Hernandez greets him unceremoniously and ushers Detective Wachowski through the administrative paperwork of a new recruit with little sympathy or patience. He tells Darren how tough the Miami streets are and bets him a sizable amount of money that he won’t last six months.

CH 1/Scene 5 - Chief Hernandez introduces Darren to his new partner, William Bell. Detective Bell is not impressed by Darren and tells him to stay out of his way. He gets in on the Chief’s bet and doubles the wager. Darren explains his motivation to be a detective stems from his father’s pride and ambition. The doubts of his colleagues only fuel his desire to prove them all wrong. Then, Detective Bell is given a new assignment, a missing person’s case. Detective Wachowski is anxious to ride along but Detective Bell makes Darren Wachowski stay at the office. He gives Darren all his past due paperwork and rides off to check out the latest call.

Chapter Two

CH 2/Scene 1 - Detective Bell arrives at the scene of a missing person call in a suburb of Miami. A distraught mother pleads with Detective Bell to find her missing daughter. She says the girl’s estranged father stole her away from the home in the middle of the night. Detective Bell notices some erratic behavior on the part of the mother and does some deeper investigation at the mother’s home. He finds evidence of drug use and has questions about inconsistencies in the mother’s story. He assures her that the missing girl will be returned without delay.

CH 2/Scene 2 - Detective Bell calls Detective Wachowski back at the station and asks him to run some background checks on the mother and father. Meanwhile, he visits an old friend in the neighborhood, a former girlfriend who has remained close friends with William for years. They talk about general matters until the conversation becomes more personal. William asks her why things didn’t work out between them and his former lover blames William’s diehard work ethic and lack of emotion. She shrugs off his romantic advances and leaves William alone with his wasted efforts.

CH 2/Scene 3 - Back at the police station, Detective Wachowski has a tough time working with the computer system. He gets frustrated and takes a long ride through the city instead. He starts interviewing people in an old fashioned way to get the information Detective Bell requested. He finds out the location of the missing girl’s father and some key information about the mother‘s extra-curricular activities. He’s so busy working the case, that he misses repeated calls from Detective Bell.

CH 2/Scene 4 - Detective Bell returns to the station, but can’t find Detective Wachowski anywhere. He’s furious and searches for him all over the building. Everyone he encounters has never even heard of the guy and gives Detective Bell a hard time about his new partner. He tries to find the Chief so he can complain about the rookie, but even Chief Gonzalez is nowhere to be found. Detective Bell has nothing to do but file the administrative reports that Darren left on his desk.

CH 2/Scene 5 - It’s the end of the day and Detective Bell has been sitting at his desk catching up on the paperwork he left for Wachowski. He rubs his eyes and prepares to leave the building. On the front steps, he runs into Wachowski. The rookie seems proud and anxious to share the details of his day with Detective Bell. They have a heated argument about protocol and keeping in touch. Then, Detective Bell suggests that the mother of the kidnapped girl wasn’t being truthful in her complaint. Darren agrees and opens his squad car door. The missing girl steps out of the vehicle and Darren explains to his partner that he tracked down the father of the missing girl, who had no idea the child was missing. He led him to the missing girl’s grandmother, who took the girl away from the mother’s home after finding her passed out from drugs and alcohol. Detective Bell tells Darren he did a good job, but reprimands him all the same for not following protocol and going over his head.

Chapter Three

CH 3/Scene 1 - It’s early in the morning and the two detectives are having breakfast at the local diner. A few weeks have passed and the two detectives are still struggling to get along. Detective William Bell likes to move at the speed of light, often working alone. His partner, Detective Darren Wachowski likes to take things slow and work hands-on in an old-fashioned round-about way. They have an ideological clash over how a true detective is supposed to work a case. They argue over tactics until an urgent call comes in from Chief Gonzalez. They are ordered to report to the station at once.

CH 3/Scene 2 - At the police station, the detectives are urged to interview a walk-in, a young battle rapper named Tugg Malice. He is scared and afraid. The detectives interview him and clash over interrogation tactics yet again. Bell wants to be tough on the man while Wachowski wants to befriend the young rapper. They both wind up confusing the walk-in and get little information from him. Tugg Malice says he’s being threatened by a rival rapper named Fillin’ the Blank, but both detectives don’t take him too seriously. Most rappers threaten each other in their rhymes all the time. They urge Tugg Malice to either give up the profession or lay low for awhile. They give him half-hearted assertions that they’ll check into the matter further.

CH 3/Scene 3 - Detective Wachowski gets an urgent call from a local hospital informing him that his father has suffered a stroke. He rushes off to the hospital to comfort his father. The doctors tell him that his father is in poor health and needs time to recover. Detective Wachowski is devastated and spends the entire day and night at his father’s bedside. Later that night, Detective Bell stops by the hospital to check on his rookie partner. He shares a story about his own father and their troubled relationship. He tells Darren that if he needs anything at all, he’ll be there for him. It’s the first time the two men have a conciliatory moment together.

Part Two - Main Action

Chapter Four

CH 4/Scene 1 - It’s the early hours of the morning and a young man exit’s a local night club in Miami. He says goodbye to his friends and walks off into the night. He gets in his car and drives off toward a notoriously dangerous Miami borough called Overtown. He looks in his rearview mirror and notices he’s being followed. The young man takes evasive action in his car and a brief chase ensues. The young man thinks he’s lost the tail and heads for home. As he makes his way toward his front door, a masked figure stalks him from the shadows. As the door opens, the young man is attacked and stabbed repeatedly.

CH 4/Scene 2 - Detective Bell pulls up to the scene of the crime in Overtown. Detective Wachowski is already on the scene. Detective Bell is eager to get to work on the case because this is what he does best: analyze the crime scene and search for hidden clues. He and Detective Wachowski identify the victim of the stabbing as none other than Vance Gallagher aka Fillin’ the Blank. There’s no sign of forced entry but Detective Wachowski notes several defensive wounds on the victim’s body. Detective Bell takes special notice of the surgical precision of the killing wounds and two ominous black roses draped over the victim’s body. He gathers several clues at the scene, some duct tape, blood splatter traces and the black roses. They search through the deceased man’s smashed phone and retrieve his SIM card. They find out that he has a girlfriend in the area named Felicia McNair. They decide to split up. Wachowski will go after Tugg Malice and Detective Bell will pay a visit to Felicia McNair.

CH 4/ Scene 3 - Detective Wachowski goes by the local nightclub to enquire about the victim. He asks if anyone saw Fillin’ the Blank that night, but nobody gives him any reliable leads. Detective Wachowski orders the closed-circuit video tape from the owner just to be on the safe side. He does find out from a flyer at the club that Tugg Malice records music at a local studio not far from the club.

CH 4/ Scene 4 - Detective Bell pulls up to a modest house in Miami, the residence of Felicia McNair. He knocks on the door and is instantly attracted to the beautiful young woman that comes to the door. He tries to remain professional and gives her the bad news about her boyfriend’s gruesome death. He questions her about her whereabouts and she says she has been at home all night. Detective Bell is worried about her and asks to place a guardsman on duty. Felicia accepts and thanks Detective Bell for his help. He promises to find who killed her boyfriend.

CH 4/ Scene 5 - Detective Wachowski drives over to the recording studio looking for Tugg Malice. None of the guys standing around outside the building give him any help and he can’t gain access to the building without an access code. Darren goes around to the back of the building and spots a possible way inside. He enters the building next door, climbs to the roof and makes a nerve-racking leap to the studio building. Once inside the studio, Darren finds Tugg Malice inside. Tugg bolts off running and Detective Wachowski follows him on foot. Detective Wachowski is way out of shape, so Tugg Malice manages to escape in the night.

Chapter Five

CH 5/ Scene 1 - Back at the police station, Chief Gonzalez chews out Detective Wachowski for letting their best lead get away. Detective Bell is also upset. Wachowski can only take the barrage and promise to exercise more and call for backup if he needs it. The two detectives search for a way to find Tugg Malice now that he’s been tipped off to their suspicions. They search online and find out about an upcoming hip-hop festival that features battle rappers from Miami. They think it’s the best place to look for Tugg.

CH 5/ Scene 2 - Detective Bell decides to pay another friendly visit to Felicia McNair’s house. She invites him inside for an afternoon cup of tea. He tells her that their lead suspect got away, but they have a good lead on where to find him next. He asks her if she knows who Tugg Malice is and Felicia acknowledges that Tugg Malice and Fillin’ the Blank used to be in a rap group together. They were best friends at one point until Fillin the Blank got a promising record deal and the other members didn‘t. Detective Bell thanks Felicia for the tea and company. He leaves just before things get romantically awkward between them.

CH 5/ Scene 3 - Detective Wachowski is back at the hospital with his father. He’s getting better and the two share a discussion about Darren’s job so far. They have a heart-warming moment together when Detective Wachowski’s father promises to eat better and exercise if Darren will do the same. Encouraged by his father’s road to recovery, Detective Wachowski redoubles his efforts to crack the case.

CH 5/ Scene 4 - At the police station, Darren and William are on their way to review some crucial forensic evidence collected from the scene of the crime. At the forensic lab, the technician reveals that what they thought were defensive wounds on the victim’s body were actually made by a woman’s fingernails. The victim didn’t die in a fight. He was possibly with a woman at the time of his death. Yet the autopsy doesn’t reveal a DNA match on the scratch wounds in their criminal database. Detective Wachowski thinks Felicia might have something to do with the crime, but Detective Bell waves his assumptions off. He thinks maybe Fillin the Blank was seeing another woman on the side. Detective Wachowski convinces Detective Bell to let him tag along next time he pays a friendly visit to Felicia McNair.

CH 5/Scene 5 - Detectives Bell and Wachowski pull up to Felicia McNair’s home. This time, she is nervous and suspicious of Detective Wachowski’s presence. Wachowski leads the interrogation, but Felicia deflects his questions and gets upset. She insists that she wasn’t at her boyfriend’s house and didn’t see him the whole night. She demands to speak with a lawyer and doesn’t want to answer anymore questions. The detectives leave and Detective Bell is furious because he lost ground with the beautiful young woman he’s been pursuing. This time, it’s Wachowski who lectures him on being professional and objective about the case.

Chapter Six

CH 6/Scene 1 - It’s the night of the hip-hop festival and Detective Bell still has an attitude toward Darren. They ride together and argue over Detective Bell’s over-reaching tactics and Detective Wachowski’s unconventional methods of interrogation. They agree to no longer be partners and put in for transfers once this case is over.

CH 6/Scene 2 - Once the detectives reach the nightclub, they see a chaotic scene outside. Local police are already roping off the area and crowds of people are amassing near the exit and parking lot. The detectives make their way inside and find out that a homicide has taken place inside the club. A masked attacker gained access to the backstage area and killed Tugg Malice. The detectives instantly go to work and find another pair of black roses on Tugg’s body. He has also been the victim of multiple stab wounds and lacerations. The club doesn’t have closed-circuit cameras so the detectives question as many witnesses as they can find. There aren’t any credible leads, but they talk to Dame Copa, the producer and beat maker for the rap group. She provides more insight into the group that Tugg Malice and Fillin’ the Blank belonged to. She and her last remaining rapper, Headmaster are the last members of the group and they’re both seem scared for their lives. Dame Copa reveals that she and Fillin the Blank had a relationship on the side, but her alibi for the night of his death is airtight. She has time-stamped recording sessions from the studio on that night. Headmaster, on the other hand, insists that he was alone at home.

CH 6/ Scene 3 - The detectives ride back to the police station in downtown Miami. They are more confused now than ever before. Their primary suspect is dead, Dame Copa has an airtight alibi and now there seems to be a serial killer on the loose. The two detectives begin pouring over the criminal events and evidence, trying to find some clues about the case. Detective Wachowski reviews the CCTV tapes from the Miami night club just before Vance Gallagher was killed. He finds a familiar face arguing with Fillin’ the Blank just before he left the club. It’s his girlfriend, Felicia McNair.

CH 6/Scene 4 - The detectives rush over to Felicia McNair’s house. When they reach the house, nobody answers the door and Felicia’s car is missing. They try to call but there’s no answer. They figure out that Felicia must have been jealous about Fillin the Blank’s relationship with his female producer, Dame Copa. When Felicia found out about the recording deal, she must have confronted her boyfriend at the club. When he blew her off, she must have followed him home. It was all speculation, but it was enough to make them rush over to Dame Copa’s address.

CH 6/Scene 5 - The detective’s speed through Miami until they reach Dame Copa’s address. They can’t reach Dame Copa or Headmaster by phone. They don’t see Felicia’s car anywhere nearby, but they approach the residence with caution. With guns drawn, they approach the scene. There’s no answer at the door, but they hear the sound of breaking glass from inside. Detective Wachowski calls for backup. The detectives split up and try to gain access to the house. Once inside, Detective Bell notices a trail of blood on the floor. Then, he confronts a masked intruder dressed in all black. A fight ensues and Detective Wachowski has to open fire to save William Bell’s life. They rip the mask off the serial killer to reveal the face of Headmaster, the last member of the rap group. Inside the bathroom, Dame Copa is dead and Felicia McNair is there as well, badly in need of medical attention. Detective Bell calls for an ambulance and begins tending to her wounds.

Part Three – Resolution

Chapter Seven

CH 7/Scene 1 - At the hospital, Detective Bell visits Felicia McNair, who is recovering from her injuries. He tells her that Headmaster is dead and so is Dame Copa. Felicia explains to him that she caught Fillin’ the Blank cheating on her, but she never tried to hurt him. She figured out that he was cheating with Dame Copa. Furious, she drove over to her place to confront the female producer, only to find Headmaster already attacking her. Detective Bell tells Felicia that Headmaster was jealous of Vance’s record deal and wanted to kill off the rest of the group so he would get more attention and notoriety. He hoped it would lead to a record deal of his own. When Dame Copa started talking to the detectives, he tried to take her out as well.

CH 7/Scene 2 - Detective Bell visits Darren Wachowski next, looking after his ailing father in the same hospital. Detective Bell tells him how brave his son is and thanks Darren for saving his life. He asks Detective Wachowski if they can stay together as partners. He reveals to him that he never had a close bond with his own father and it forced him to become reclusive and overly-ambitious. He tells Darren that he admires his close connection with his father and hopes that they can become friends, as well as partners.

CH 7/ Scene 3 - Darren Wachowski and William Bell leave the hospital together and discuss more details about the Black Roses case. Detective Wachowski wonders if the bet is still on. As they are getting in the car together, Chief Gonzalez calls and orders them back to the station as soon as possible. They have to get to work immediately on the next homicide case.
