The Paleo diet is an ancient form of diet that is believed to have existed since the time our ancestors, the Paleoliths, walked on Earth. These Paleoliths were healthy specimens despite existing at a time when there was not much choice in terms of the food that was available at their disposal. They would make do with the animals that they hunted down and the fruits, vegetables and edible leaves that they gathered. The Paleo diet therefore is also known as a hunter and gatherer diet. This form of diet is said to help mankind grow strong muscles, bones and also aid in the upkeep of overall bodily functions. This very aspect of the diet is what makes many modern day enthusiasts follow it religiously, to the point of mimicking Paleo man’s hunting and gathering habits.

Right from celebrities to athletes, many people follow the Paleo diet in a bid to lose weight and also develop a strong body. There are, however, many restrictions to the diet, as Paleoliths did not have access to modern day foods. Therefore, there is a blanket ban on the consumption of junk and processed foods and also caffeinated drinks and alcohol. Since dairy products were yet to be discovered, modern day Paleo dieters refrain from consuming it and stick with foods that remain within the boundaries of the diet.

Doctor Loren Cordain is regarded as the father of modern day Paleo diets as he is said to have studied the diet for many years before zeroing in on it as the best weight loss diet that a person can take up. Most Paleo dieters take it up for the tremendous weight loss benefits that it provides. It is possible for a person to lose a substantial amount of weight within a short amount of time, given they follow the rules laid down by the diet.

Apart from weight loss, the diet also aids in improving memory, maintaining bone and teeth health, adding glow to the skin, improving the texture of the mane, check hormonal imbalances etc. Although not much scientific proof is available to support these claims, many dieters take it up with the hopes of shedding weight and gaining lean muscle.

CHAPTER 1: PALEO DIPS

SRIRACHA SAUCE

Ingredients:

3/4 pound fresh red hot jalapeno or Fresno peppers, stemmed, deseeded, chopped

2 Thai chilies, stemmed, deseeded, thinly sliced

3 cloves garlic

1 tablespoon fish sauce

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1 1/2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

1 tablespoon raw honey

Sea salt to taste

Method:

Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Add a little water if you desire a sauce of thinner consistency.

Transfer into a saucepan and place the saucepan over medium high heat. Bring to a boil.

Lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in between a couple of times.

When done, remove from heat and cool completely.

Pour into a jar and store in the refrigerator.

TOMATO SALSA:

Ingredients:

4 medium tomatoes, diced, seeded

¼ cup green onion, chopped

¼ cup fresh cilantro

1 teaspoon chili flakes or cayenne pepper

3 tablespoons lime juice

4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon sea salt

Method:

Mix together tomatoes, green onions, cilantro, chili flakes, lime juice, salt and olive oil bowl. Cover and refrigerate until use.

BABA GHANOUSH

Ingredients:

1 large eggplant

1 tablespoon tahini

1 clove garlic, minced

1 1/2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon cumin powder (optional)

Salt to taste

Pepper powder to taste

2 tablespoons fresh parsley for garnishing
