Every civilization has been built not only on stone and steel, but on the systems through which it decided what was true. From the clay tablets of ancient Mesopotamia to the algorithmic architectures of the present, the mechanisms by which information moves — and by which certain information is suppressed — have always been instruments of governance as much as communication. The question Yuval Noah Harari places at the center of this inquiry is not what humanity has known, but how it has organized knowing, and what that organization has cost. The first axis of this history is bureaucratic. Written language did not emerge as a tool of poetry or philosophy. It emerged as an instrument of inventory, taxation, and command — a way for early states to extend administrative reach beyond the physical limits of any single ruler's voice. The printing press accelerated this dynamic rather than dissolving it, placing the power to manufacture consensus within reach of those who could afford the press, not necessarily those who possessed the truth. What each successive information technology shared was a structural tendency: networks that served the coherence of large human groups did so by privileging social order over factual accuracy. Myth, doctrine, and ideology were not failures of these systems. They were, in a very precise sense, their products. The second axis is sociological.
