Miles Halter

Miles Halter is the 16-year-old protagonist and gives the point-of-view of the story. He describes himself as approximately 6-feet-tall and skinny. He moves to a boarding school at a late age, much to the confusion and curiosity of his parents. Miles says that he wants attend a boarding school to “seek a Great Perhaps,” which is the saying of author Francois Rabelais that he read in his biography. He hasn’t found or created any significant relationships in his hometown and school, and merely hangs out with the drama people and English geeks in the cafeteria because he sees it as a social necessity. Miles likes reading biographies, especially those of authors, even if he hasn’t read any of their works. He also has a strange obsession with memorizing famous last words.
