Daphne’s panties were wet with desire as she strode down East 14th street toward her boyfriend Billy’s house. Today was the day she was finally going to surrender to his constant pleas and give up her virginity to him. They had waited long enough, and now that they were finally out of high school, it seemed like the right time. It was a time for new beginnings, for turning points.

Billy knew nothing of this. Not yet. She wanted to surprise him. She couldn’t wait to see the look on his face. Hell, she couldn’t wait to feel him inside her. It would be a day for both of them to remember forever.

Her route took her past Cocker’s Tavern on the corner of East 14th and Fletcher. It didn’t open till five p.m., and the parking lot was empty except for a horribly familiar black van. Just the sight of it was enough to make Daphne’s heart beat harder and adrenaline to pump through her veins. Shit. That was Cole’s van.

Cole was the leader of the trio of local bullies who had made Billy’s life hell all throughout high school. She didn’t know how many times Cole and his equally cruel buddies Bo and Jerry had taunted or beaten up Billy and sent him home in tears. She didn’t know how many tender, comforting embraces she had given him after a mauling at their big, brutish hands, how many tears she had kissed from his thin, pale cheeks, how many times she had striven tirelessly to convert his despair to joy and hope. She thanked God she and Billy would be heading off to college in another part of the state in the Fall. Cole and his boorish friends wouldn’t be getting any farther than the local community college, if that. Hell, Cole had repeated so many grades in high school, he ought to be ready to graduate from college by now.

She saw only the van. There was no sign of the three stooges, as Billy always called them (though never to their faces, of course). Nevertheless, she quickened her pace to try to pass the parking lot before they could make an appearance.
