Introduction to the French Bulldog Bible

Isn’t a Frenchie a really cute dog?

Have you always wanted to own a dog? Has something drawn you to the French Bulldog?

If yes, we all know that it is a somewhat daunting decision. It could be compared to having your own child as you have to deal with feeding, cleaning, and training your dog. It is a big decision.

If you have been thinking of bringing home a French bulldog, then I guess you cannot resist those cute bat ears and shiny button eyes. It is as if you melt whenever you look at it because it is just too adorable. Its petite build is also irresistible that you want to just bring it home and take care of it! As friendly as it looks, bet you just want to pet a Frenchie.

If you have been thinking of going home to a little fellow that looks like it is always in a good mood, your best bet is a Frenchie. Frenchies are cute and easy-to-deal-with bulldog breeds. Despite their gloomy face, Frenchies are lively, amiable, and dependable.

French bulldogs were first seen in the 1800s from a cross between its bulldog ancestors from England and local ratters from France. Back then, they were already cute and adorable, and it looks like nothing has changed.

French bulldogs are wonderful companion dogs. Their easy-going attitude and tolerance make them good companions for children. They are also very social, so it is not so much of a problem to bring them to public places. They seem to be very active and alert. They are also good watchdogs as they tend to be protective of their owners. They will bark at you if they do not know you!

Taking care of a Frenchie has its own set of challenges. If you have been thinking for so long about the steps to finding a good Frenchie breed, bulldog-proofing your home, and training them, then you should read on.

Dogs love the outdoors. Frenchies are not an exception (on occasion) but prefer to live inside!

This book will teach you how about the history and the standards of raising a French bulldog. Succeeding chapters will give you tips on how to pick a good breeder or an adoption center, choose between a puppy and an adult Frenchie, pick the right supplies before you bring home your new pet, and prepare your home to your new companion, just to name a few.

French Bulldog History

Just look at those eyes!

Those mesmerising big button eyes are so irresistible; it seems like any Frenchie can enslave a human with a single glance. Those bat ears and a coat so velvety and warm will make you want to pet them.

French bulldogs came all the way from their ancestors that travelled from England to Paris. They came from a line of English bulldogs and Parisian local ratters. That gave them their physical characteristics: they still look like a bulldog, but they have bat ears and are petite in structure.

In this chapter, you will learn more about how French bulldogs came to be. Chapter 1 also talks about the differences among other famous bulldog breeds like the American and the English bulldogs. You will learn their differences in physical appearance and temperament.

History of French Bulldogs

Regardless of their sizes and ages, Frenchies are adorable.

Have you ever wanted a French bulldog? Or have you always been fascinated by its cute face and tiny bone structure?

If yes, you should read on. Perhaps you are wondering why they are called French bulldogs. French bulldogs, also known by the name Frenchies, descended from a miniature molossoid (mastiff) breed. This is a breed of solid, stocky dogs that are believed to have descended from Molossus, a shepherd dog that appeared in Molossia in northwest Greece. Other molossoid breeds include the Neopolitan Mastiff, Cane Corso, Tosa Inu, and Dogo Argentino.

In particular, the Frenchies’ origins can be traced as far as the 1800s when their bulldog ancestors from England crossbred with local ratters in Paris, France.

In 1835, blood sports were banned in England, halting the local bull-baiting industry. Since the ancestor English bulldogs no longer served their sporting purpose, they were bred to be ‘companions’. Given their huge size, they were crossed with other breeds to make them look friendlier. Eventually, toy bulldogs became more common in England. When the lace industry moved to France, lace makers brought their bulldogs with them. As smaller dogs became more popular, importing small bulldogs became a business in France. From then on, French bulldogs caught on.
