Dripping Sweat

“The fuck do you think you’re doing bitch?”

I froze up. I thought he would be out of the house for at least a few hours, but here he was. How the hell did I not notice him coming in through the door?

“Come over here right now.” I hesitated, and then walked over to him. It’s not like I had a choice. Tyler had a crazy look in his eyes, a look I knew all too well. I could smell the distinct smell of crack as I stood in front of him, unable to meet his eyes. When we had first started going out everything had been fine, I was attracted to his bad boy persona but over the past year he had done nothing but get more and more violent, to the point where I felt more like his prisoner than his girlfriend.

“Did I say you could be hanging around my crib when I’m not home?”

I felt tears sting my eyes. Tyler would find any excuse at all to be mad at me, no matter how hard I tried to please him. I was just over to pick up a few things I had left at his house. My plan was to save whatever little money I could, and then get the hell out of there. The only problem was, Tyler wasn’t the type of guy to just get over me. He would do his best to track me down, and when he did there’s no telling what he would do.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, I just left some stuff here...”

He tilted his head to the side and spoke up.

“You should be fucking sorry. Now get out.”

I stood there frozen, trying to summon up the courage to tell him the way he was treating me was wrong. As always, I couldn’t do it.

“Go on, STEP.” He raised his hand as if to grab me, so I quickly ran out the door. As soon as I hopped in the car I drove back to my apartment, pulling in quickly and hurrying to my door. I was walking so fast I didn’t notice the man following me, that is, until I got to the door and he placed a hand on my shoulder.

Spinning around quickly, I stumbled backwards. I was surprised to find a white man dressed in black holding a badge out in front of him.

“My name is Detective Nicholson, but you can call me Alex. We need to have a chat.”

I sucked in my breath quickly as I tried to make sense of the situation. Was he there to ask about Tyler, or was there a shooting or something in the apartment complex? Either way, I knew what happened to snitches.

“I don’t know anything, I didn’t see anything, and I didn’t hear anything. Now if you’ll excuse me.”

I turned around to open my door, but he quickly reached around and snatched the keys out of my hand.

“Hey! Go to hell, I didn’t do anything.”

He just shook his head with an amused expression on his face.
