Alicia took a long drag of her cigarette before flicking it into the gutter. She wasn’t used to the weather in New York, and she tightened her scarf around her neck as she stood outside in the freezing cold, waiting for her boyfriend to walk out of the store he worked in. She had driven almost 1,000 miles to get to New York to move in with him, and now he was taking his sweet ass time to come down and get her.
Sighing loudly, she reached into her purse to call him for the third time, but quickly put it away as she saw him walk out the front door.
“Luther!” She said excitedly, running forward to give him a hug. He hugged her back, but for some reason he didn’t look happy. Alicia let go of him and went up to kiss him, but he turned his head slightly to avoid her kiss. Feeling a strange sensation overcome her as she looked into his eyes, she took her hands off him.
“Luther? What’s the deal?” Luther looked around, as if trying to find some sort of excuse to leave. He sighed deeply and put his hands together, and opened his mouth to speak before closing it again. Alicia was about to burst.
Finally, he spoke up. “I’m sorry Alicia, I know you came all the way out here for me but there’s something I have to tell you. I thought I could keep it a secret, but she got your number out of my phone and threatened to call if I didn’t tell you...”
I felt like I had been punched in the stomach, and all the air was knocked out of me.
“Tell me what.”
“I... I made a mistake. I’ve been seeing another girl for the past 3 months.”
Feeling dizzy, Alicia stared at him in complete and utter shock.
“You made a mistake? A three month long mistake?”
He couldn’t look her in the eye, instead staring at the ground dejectedly. Alicia felt hot tears sting her eyes as she tried to stop from breaking down completely.
“Why did you let me come all the way to New York to tell me? I’ve already paid a down payment on an apartment you dumb motherfucker! Fuck!”
She reached out and slapped him across the face, before her emotions overwhelmed her and she started crying uncontrollably. Luther reached out a hand to comfort her, but Alicia pushed him away violently.
“Get off me! What the fuck is wrong with you!”
Turning around, she ran off down the street as fast as she could, not knowing where she was going or what she would do. She ignored the judging stares of other people as she ran, only stopping after several minutes had passed and she was completely out of breath. Eventually her legs faltered and she leaned up against a coffee shop, drying the tears out of her eyes with her scarf.
Taking deep, shuddering breaths she managed to calm herself down. She couldn’t believe that he could be so selfish! While she was working hard every day to save up enough money to make it to New York, he had been fucking who knows how many other women. She didn’t know a single person in New York, and she didn’t have a job lined up. She stood outside for what felt like hours, staring off into the distance as she desperately tried to think of how she would put the broken pieces of her life back together.
Eventually, she managed to get over the initial shock, and could feel the cold penetrating her clothing. She turned and walked into the coffee shop, exhaling deeply as the warmth welcomed her inside. She walked to the counter and ordered a caramel macchiato, and scanned the room with tired eyes while she waited. She noticed an attractive white man in a suit staring at her with raised eyebrows.
Sighing and averting her eyes, she turned around so he couldn’t see her face. She knew her eyes were red, but that was no reason to stare at her. Grabbing her coffee from the barista, she walked over to the opposite side of the room from him and tried to concentrate on making a plan to survive.
Minutes passed in quiet reflection, before her thoughts were interrupted by a tap on her shoulder. She looked up, surprised to see the white guy who was looking at her earlier was now smiling at her, and taking a seat at her table.
“Um, I don’t remember asking you to sit with me.”
He just laughed, taking a sip of his own drink as if she was an old friend telling a joke.
“I recognized you, so I thought I should come over and say hi.”
Alicia tilted her head and studied his face, wondering who he could be. He was an older man but still very handsome, and she knew it wasn’t the type of face she would forget. After a brief pause, she decided to stop the games and find out who he was.
“If this is some attempt at a pick up line, it’s not going to work. This is my first day in this city, so I doubt we’ve met before. If you think you can just walk over in an expensive suit and sweep me off my feet you need to check yourself.”
To Alicia’s annoyance, he just grinned further.
“If I wanted to hit on you, I would have when you spilled water all over me.”
Like a bolt of lightning, Alicia recognized him. On her way out of the plane she was taking a swig out of her water bottle, when her carry on was caught on a seat in first class and she spilled it... all over him.
“Ooooh.” She said, embarrassed.
“It’s quite alright.” He said. “That’ll teach me to take my sweet time getting off the plane. It’s just those first class seats are so comfortable and I wanted to finish the report I was writing. Anyway, my name is Jack, but you can call me Mr. Ellison. Who do I have the pleasure of being reunited with?”
Alicia gave him a guilty smile.
“My name’s Alicia. Look, I’m really sorry. I didn’t stop to say that in the plane because I was in a rush, and embarrassed, and lord knows I thought I would never see you again. First Class usually leaves the plane first so I wasn’t paying attention when I walked through on my way out. I mean – “ He stopped me mid-sentence with a raised hand.
“What are you apologizing for? If you hadn’t spilled water on me I wouldn’t have an excuse to walk over to talk to you. I think having a cup of coffee with a beautiful woman is worth a bit of water on my suit.”
Alicia felt flattered, but after getting her heart broken by Luther she wasn’t in the mood to play games with another man.
“Thank you, but I probably look like shit. My boyfriend broke up with me today after I flew here to be closer to him, so now I’m stuck here with no job, no boyfriend, and no idea what the hell I’m going to do. So if you don’t mind, I’ll have this cup of coffee alone.”
His expression instantly turned serious. “I’m sorry to hear that.”
“Well, sorry doesn’t help.” He looked insulted, and I instantly felt bad for snapping at him. “I’m sorry, you’ve been nice, but unless a miracle happens I’m completely screwed.”
He nodded. “Well, I don’t know about a miracle but I can solve one of your problems... how would you like to be my new secretary?”
Alicia blinked rapidly; almost too overwhelmed with how this day had gone to believe she could be that lucky.
“I appreciate it and everything, but why would you want to hire me? I’m just some clumsy bitch who spilled her drink on you.”
“Well for one, you always get straight to the point with no bullshit, and I like that in a woman. Besides, you have other redeeming qualities.” Before Alicia could ask what he meant, he pulled out a business card and tossed it on the table, standing up as he did it.
“Well my company isn’t going to run itself, so I should be going. If you want to take this opportunity, visit the address on that business card at 9AM sharp and don’t be late, or my offer is off the table. Have a good day Alicia.”
She barely had time so say thank you before she was watching him walk out the door. Agitated thoughts swirled through her mind, and she sunk her head into her arms as her emotions overwhelmed her.
What the hell she thought I might as well give it a go. It’s not like I have any other options.
She silently cursed Luther for putting her in such a messed up situation. Pulling out her phone, she deleted his contact and scrolled through her pictures, deleting every single one that reminded her of Luther, feeling a jolt of sadness every time she pressed delete. He had broken her heart, but not her spirit.
This is only going to make me stronger. She finally realized. After all, isn’t success the best revenge?
The next morning, Alicia woke up to the sound of her alarm clock ringing loudly. Groaning, she rolled out of bed and turned it off. Normally she had to hit snooze a few times before getting out of bed, but today was different. There was a sense of urgency now, a spring in her step that wasn’t there before. She quickly showered and began applying her makeup, fixing up her weave and getting dressed for an office. She wore a white blouse with a black business skirt, and high heels. She turned around in front of the bathroom mirror to check herself out, and when she was finally satisfied she headed out the door.
When she arrived, she had to double check the business card to make sure she was in the right place. She was standing in front of a massive skyscraper, with a marble entrance. She shook her head as she looked at the business card. It didn’t even say which part of the building his office was located in.
Is this some sort of prank?
Sighing to herself, she decided to bite the bullet and ask anyway. She walked into the luxurious ground level, feeling out of place. Approaching the front desk which was staffed by several people, she asked the one closest to her for directions.
“Hello, I’m supposed to be meeting John Ellison? I’m not sure if his office is in this building, though.”
The receptionist stared at her blankly as if she was an idiot, before laughing. “Honey, you are aware John Ellison owns this building? His office is on the top floor, but you’re not going to get without his permission, and something tells me you two don’t know each other... What’s your name?”
Alicia could feel her head spinning, and wondered yet again if this was all some sort of elaborate prank. “My name’s Alicia, we had a 9AM meeting.”
Nodding her head, she picked up the phone and dialed. “Hello Mr. Ellison? We have someone named Alicia here who claims to have an appointment with you?” She stared off into the distance, and nodded her head. “Absolutely Sir, I’ll send her right up.”
Instantly, the receptionist’s attitude was much more polite. Before, she was looking at Alicia as if she was an idiot, now she was rolling out the red carpet.
“I apologize, Ma’am, that was my mistake. If you follow me I’ll escort you to the elevator right away.”
She walked around, and Alicia followed her in a daze. When Alicia stepped into the elevator, the receptionist scanned her card, pressed the right level for her and looked at her almost pleadingly. “Again, I would like to apologize for my behavior earlier, Ma’am.”
“Um, that’s ok. Thank you.”
As the elevator shot up to the top floor, she felt a new rush of nervousness. If simply being Mr. Ellison’s assistant made people treat her like that, she wondered just how obedient she would have to be to him. She thought back on the way she had talked to him earlier, and cringed.
Taking a deep breath, she put on a smile as the elevator doors opened. She walked out and scanned the room, her jaw dropping from the sheer luxury of everything, it seemed less like an office and more like a penthouse. She couldn’t see a single person.
